Hello! I decided against buying a new pickup. I can't afford the new truck payment and higher insurance yet. (I'm still too young.) I decided since I DO have a little bit of money, I'm going to fix up ole' Betsy. I was wondering what I would have to do to drop a 351 in my truck? With the gas milage I'm getting, I might as well buy a fresh motor with more all around power. It's a 1994 F150, 2wd. Nothing special. Will the motor hook up to my tranny? Please let me know! Thank you.
I'm guessing that your tranny is the E4OD, which is computer controlled. So you will need the engine, all the accessories, the wiring harness, and an ECM from an E4OD/351 truck.
It's a LOT of work for not a lot more power. The 300 will come very close to holding its own against a 351. The engines basically perform the same up until 3000. At that point the 300 runs out of air and the 351 keeps going. I've owned both, and to be honest, I would rather have the six.
There are a couple speed-density friendly cams that you could put in there that will hop it up. I would also suggest upgrading the rear end to 3.55, possibly with a limited slip if you're so inclined. You will notice a huge jump in power going to 3.55 and depending on how you use and drive the truck, you may end up getting better mileage.
You'll thank yourself for sticking with the six. You can warm em up a little bit to make em run better. I would rebuild your current motor, if and when it needs it. Crane offers a Powermax camshaft to boost low end torque, then add a K&N intake, MSD coil, cut the 2nd cat off, and step up a pipe size on your exhaust and go to a free flowing muffler. Check out my gallery I finally got some pics in there, you will see my red 84 doing what it does best.

Did you see the video on Myspace? My 84, a newer Super Duty and a Hemi Dodge Ram? We were pulling a Lifted Chevy Blazer out of a water hole up at Silver Lake.
Yeah I'm tryin to figure out how to put it on this forum so every one can enjoy it. That was awesome, so many people tried and broke their trucks trying... nobody could get him out til a Dodge Hemi, A Ford Powerstroke, and a Ford 300 six can to the rescue! I just grin from ear to ear everytime I watch it! BTW it's on myspace.com under 1 dodge and 2 fords pulling out junk chevy. You can give it a try if you want!

I have to say I am not totally happy with the set up on my 96 F150 2wd, the motor is great... runs super strong. My problem is that fricken overly high geared POS Mazda 5 speed, it's nice for cruising down the interstate at 80+ mph... not half bad around town either. But for backing up a hill or backing up my puny utility trailer, it flat out sucks! I have to smoke and slip the hell out of the clutch so I don't stall the damn thing! I miss the nice deep reverse gear in my NP435 4 speed in my older trucks, great for backing up a heavy trailer. The 1st gear in the Mazda leaves much to be desired, I wish it was a ZF, I would have a lower reverse gear and a creeper gear. I also don't care for the 2.73 gears in the rear end, I can't shift into overdrive until 75 mph... or it damn near shuts the truck off! I am thinking I am going to change the gears to 3.55s, and see how it goes from there.
82 F100, 300/6, C4, and 3.55 limited slip, also...
86 F150, 351 HO, C6, and 3.73 locker.
On a straight stretch the 351 will just walk away from the 6, the 21 year old beat to hell 351 will also run circles around the 302 in my 96.
Both the 300 and 351 will lug 1600 pounds of scrap around all day without missing a beat. They're both very strong down low, feels like they've got the nuts to yank whatever i chain behind them. I have a great deal of respect for what they both can do. gas mileage isn't terrible between the two of them, 15.2 out of the 300 and 13.8 out of the 351, if I baby them they'll both do better.
I just really love my old 6, she may be slow, but I don't think the 351 could survive the beating my 300 has took. The 300 is the ideal truck engine, mine has provided 23 years of reliable service, and 237,000 miles. Theres no doubt if taken care of one could run 50 years.
Thank you all for your thoughts comments and replys. I will simply rebuild my 300 when it goes. I'm going 60 miles roundtrip 5 days a week now, so I'm just a little concerned.

Thanks again!
I wouldn't be concerned about the motor so much bud, as long as you have oil and water in it, she'll go for a long time. It's the rest of the truck you need to be concerned about!
i ran my old 300 with #5 cylinder running 20 psi compression pullin 33s with stock gears and a slipping automatic for 8 months back n forth to school up n down some decent grades and crusing at 75 mph before it went poof. it had blow by that bad, ever trip to school or home would puke out 4 quarts of oil...and i ran it out of oil at least a dozen times and it still ran after i refilled it.
so ya, the motors are stout LOL...and i dont even think the motor broke anything when it died.
