Part Identification

Could someone please help identify this part under the hood? It's on the passenger side just behind the battery.

What concerns me is that ocassionally, this thing makes noise while I'm waiting for the plugs to warm.

How much do shop manuals go for eh?

That's what I was going to say, the vacume pump. I never noticed before but it may be bringing the pressure up before you start like a fuel pump does?

Just looked at www.motorcraft.com web site and the shop manual FCS1210705 retails for $185.00 and has 3000 pages.

I just noticed this the other day. I hear that thing humming constantly when I have the key in the On position before I start the truck. Should it ever shut off?

Does it shut off after the engine is running?

Mine shuts off after about a minute (guessing), but it does shut off. I assume when the vacuum level has reached a certain level?

As long as it cuts off you should be OK, if it ran on the whole time you got a vacuum leak.

Yeah mine is constantly running. I just noticed it about a week and a half ago. If I wiggle the unit it will stop as long as I am holding it in a tweaked position, but if I let go it will keep running.

Riggz, I am no expert on this topic by no means so you may want to go to the engine forum with this one, but I would say you got a vacuum leak that you are fixing and unfixing as you wiggle the pump. That means it is either the pump itself are one of the lines running out of it right at the pump. Should be easy to find and fix.

Yeah, I thought that would be the problem, but I wasn't able to duplicate it today. Maybe I was unknowingly plugging the inlet port. I'm going to check the ESOF solenoid as I have read here in another thread about those things leaking.
