Took it in to the ford dealership today. They ran a check and came up with nothing then they put it up in the air and seen that a heat shield had it's welds busted then re-welded it.No more noise. The check did notice I had a turn signal out and a plate light burnt.
... then they put it up in the air and seen that a heat shield had it's welds busted ...
Any info on where this happened. I'd like to check mine, but since I don't have a lift, a little info on where to look might make the task a bit easier.
Thanks for the post back. Resolutions always help!
I was thinking the same thing. Ever get any funny sounds when starting the truck?
EDIT, i just read the rest of the thread. Id imagine the heat shield is probably around the catalytic converter somewhere. Thats usually the area with the most shielding. ANything down the length of the exaust may have shielding around it though. Just looks like a random peice of stamped steel just chillein between the exaust and everything else with a gap on either side of what its between.
Follup on this - my dealer found it. Turned out to be the inspection plate on the transmission.
If you don't know what/where this is (as I did not) it is a semi-circular plate on the foreward side of the transmission held on by two bolts. It is on the lowest hanging, furthest foreward part of the transmission. I've been under my truck quite a bit and had never seen it. Having it up on a lift helps a lot to find it.
Not exactly sure how this plate got bent on mine, but that is the problem. Pulling it off and flattening it out, then maybe RTVing it on when I bolt it up may do the trick. The dealer said it is no big deal if road debris were to get inside that area (covered by the plate) but I can't see how any good can come from that so I'm gonna find a way to seal it up AND stop the rattle.
I just found this thread too. I have a 2000 4x4 and it makes that rattle at about 2250 RPM but only under a load. If I just rev it it doesn't do it. I've checked the inspection plate on the bottom of the bell housing and seems tight and it's not bent. I took it off and it still rattles. The shield on the crossover isn't loose either.
Never got it fixed! ...but the dealer says there is some veins broke loose in the torque converter and I should drive it till it drops....so I am gonna do what they said till I come across some other solution!
umm ? Bjis I'm no great shakes as a tranny Mech, but do you really want to wait till your Torque converter blows up ( I don't mean that litteraly) and sends a whole lot of metal shavings all trrough your tranny, till you get it fixed?? I can't beleive the Stealer - Uh Dealer would recommend that. Take it to a reputable tranny shop and have a nice triple billet tq put in. Good luck,
