LS /Traction Lock rear axles had a letter in front of the number
ie: A2 , B4, C6.....later on an H2,H4,H6
Posi-traction is a GM term,. Maybe he ordered posi on his chevy truck ?

thanks for the info. i haven't even looked at the tag on the chunk, would it have the same numbering system as the door tag?
is there a forum on this site where you can go and put in your codes and find out what engine/trans/color/interior/axle ratio is on a truck? Our Fairlane site has a place where you can do that.

is it possible that the "0" isn't a zero and is actually an "O" (oh)

Nope.
Ford never used O in codes except for Date of build
They never used I (i) either.
The look like there number counterpart.
08 is good number .
Rating plate codes ?
Just post them me or someone else will decode them for you.
You can use My page here (77-79) to decode some of them but trim/paint codes changed descriptions in some years.

hmmm, talked to my father and he is absolutely convinced that the 68 model 08 code came with a locking rear. He said he went with my grandfather to buy it, and it was something he paid extra for. I asked him if the driver's door had ever been changed and he said no. I wonder if the backend may have been installed or changed at the dealership?

Those letters ( C & G) are too far away from the numbers to be part of the axle code.
They look like Transmission codes

If it's locking, would the letter be right up against the number, like this? C8

By the way...none of these trucks ever came with factory "lockers" only limited slips which by now probably would be in need of new clutches. Maybe try to jack up the rear end and see if both tires spin the same way or in opposite directions.
