I have a 1999 F-150 which turned 55,000 miles today and my service engine light came on. Is that something only a dealer can turn off or can it be done by the owner? Also, I notice now that if I do not drive my truck for a week or so when I start it the first time, lights flash, and I could not even turn it off with the key. Is this a sign of a problem already or one on the way? Thanks for any assistance on this.
The light comes on indicating an error code. You can go to the Dealer, a shop, Autozone and have it read to find out where a problem might be. Have it turned off by them, or disconnect your battery for a few minutes. If it comes back, then you have a problem that needs addressing, if not, it was an intermittent error.
I definately suggest AutoZone. It is free and just takes a few minutes. My Check engine light was coming on and it was only a bad spark plug wire...but my truck was running AWFUL. We changed the wire, and it's like new!
it can also be your O2 sensor, you will have to take it in to the shop and get a diagonistic done on it, the sensor can be worth up to $200 Cdn for it.
Open your hood and check the negative batt terminal. I have a 97 4.6 lariat and mine keeps corroding for some unknown reason (leaky batt?) I've tried clean and protect, to no avail. Anyway, if it's corroded, clean it up good and that may solve your problem. The chk engine light in my dash comes on b/c the computer reads low voltage due to the corrosion. Hope this helps.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Aug-02 AT 10:47 PM (EST)]Clean that terminal up and smother it with vasoline or a terminal protecter of some sort that prevents corrosion. That should elimate the problem or greatly reduced it. I have fought the same problem on mine as well.
Note...I am posting this in two different boards..
Guys, I am having the same problem right now on my 1998 Ford F150.
It was misfiring, the light would blink then stay on and whenever I'd give it gas, like going up a hill, I would feel hesitation. I took it to AutoZone and the code was 304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire. The guy there told me to start with replacing spark plugs, which I figured was a good idea. Then if that didn't help, replace the wires, etc.(by the way, I am a novice, know nothing about this ..)
Anyway, I got the spark plugs and gapped them, then started the easy task of replacing them...wrong! How in the heck do you get those spark plug wires off?? I pulled my *** off and got no where. I was able to get #1 off, then I went to #4 and tried for an hour, even went and bought a spark plug wire puller and still couldn't get it.
Before I started, I did disconnect the battery and cleaned the terminals, when I finally gave up last night, I put everything back together and started my truck and the light has not come back on, nor has it hesitated...for now.
I want to do this myself, and replace those plugs, does someone have tips on how to get those wires off?
Try twisting the wire by holding it at the boot. The boots tend to get stuck to the plugs during the course of time. Usually, they'll release by some twisting & turning. B-4 you reinstall, go get some dielectric grease and apply a little to the inside of each boot. That will make it easier next time. Good Luck!
