My friends dad was recently pulling a heavy load up a long hill in a '99 250 with a powerstroke and automatic tranny when the tranny puked fluid everywhere. He was told to let the truck cool off and refill it. It hasnt leaked since. What caused this? Can it be prevented?
Additional cooling would help, as would an accurate tranny thermometer so he could stop before things overheat. For now, he should strongly consider changing his fluid.
One of the guys that hauls trees for me has the same truck. He too boiled his over from overheating. He added a gauge and bigger cooler and he hasn't boiled it over, but it still gets hot on steep grades, and heavy traffic. He told me yesterday that he has seen temps up to 250!!! I think a new tranny is in his future. When he boiled it over the first time he let it cool down, and added more ATF. I read on one of these forums that 250 will really damage a tranny. I also agree, larger cooler and a guage. Levi
Sometimes when the fluid gets up over about 230 degrees it will leak out of the front seal or the vents or the dipstick tube. I think this is just a pressure relief "feature" of these trannies. Usually once cooled down they don't do it again unless you overheat again. My 94 has done this once after a long hot high speed trip with a long backup a slight hill. Backing up really heats things up.
Check the smell and color of the fluid. Should be red and chemically, not pink or brown or black and smokey. Probably cheap insurance to change fluid if it has been awhile and a guage and cooler might be worthwhile.
My 94 F250 supercab long bed 460 4x4 E4OD 4.10 Mobil 1 fluid, normally tows 8,000# and usually runs about 190 to maybe 210 on a really hot high speed tow. This is with factory aux cooler and a temp guage on the outlet side. Without a tow it may take an hour or two to warm up to 180.
Thanks for the replies guys, he has changed the fluid and hasnt had anymore problems with it. I've heard the 6.0 tranny cooler will bolt in place and help cooling?
