[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Jun-02 AT 06:35 PM (EST)]I have a '98 F-150 Ext Cab W/ 4.6, with 80,000 miles. It will not idle when cold. It also rough idles in drive sometimes. There is no pattern to the rough idle. I have also noticed that the valves knock under acceleration and at 70-75 mph. I have changed all the filters and had the injectors cleaned. Occasionaly it puffs a little blue smoke on start up. Is it the valve seats? HELP!
Just a wild guess since you're there and I'm here but sounds like a vacuum leak causing the bad idle, the pinging could be an EGR problem, so maybe it's a vacuum leak in the EGR system.
If they're in your area head for an Auto Zone store, they'll give you a free reading of any error codes stored in your ECU.
Good luck.
