calling all technitions!

im still kinda new to this profession, towards the end of college i got a job at the local gm/chrysler dealership, i have mostly been on the lube rack, but have done some actual work as well. I keep being told (about 3 months) that i will be moved over to working flatrate, but it has yet to happen. whats really bad about it is that i have seen 3 techs come and go in the time that i was supposed to be moved over. i still enjoy doing actual work on cars, and i know i can usually beat flatrate. so i have decided that its probably time to move on.

since i am in a small town, there isn't too much work going around so there is some fluctuation in how much work is around. i have the option of commuting 25-40 miles each way every day to a bigger town. or find something here. local jobs include the pet food plant and a fairly well established trucking company looking for diesel mechanics.

my question for you is what do you work on, where are you from, and any other kind of suggestion that you may have for me.

thanks

Go to work for the trucking company. I prefer working on trucks.

I am only an amateur mechanic (technician), but I have spent a lot of years in business. My advise is .... if you want to know something, ask.

From what I have heard the Diesil mechanics is where it is.
Might be hard heavy work but I have heard the pay is good for a good mechanic.

Are you ASE or cert. in anything? If not, do that first and make yourself more valuable to an employer. If you are in it for the long haul, get a job at Ryder truck. It may take a couple of years though. Took me almost 1 year from job interview to being hired. They check everything.

If you are in a small town and there isn't much work, flat rate may not be the way to go. There has to be a reason they left..... By all means take the ASE tests, as many as you can or feel confident in taking. Best of Luck, George

Dono had good advice.... if you don't know ask. i learned alot by asking. i didn't ask Dono..... i asked a drunk that sleeps in the empty residence in my park, but he used Dono as a reference. so it worked.
