Hello guy's The fwd injector on the drivers side is blowing a very slight amount of bubbles around the base of the injector. Since I just installed a new return line kit I thought I might pull the injector and install a new crush ring but this injector is tight I am a big boy I put a good bit of pressure on this thing with a 1/2 inch pull handle and only turned it and eighth of a turn I am concerned I might twist it off in the head I have a 1994 7.3 turbo factory with 118k miles on it. The truck runs great and I managed to tighten it back the eighth of a turn any ideas?
I'd lube that guy up several days in a row with PB blaster (is that what it is or just PB?).
Anyway, hit it with the PB while warm, it'll draw it in a bit and in a couple of days you should be able to loosen it with substantially less force.
deepsouthdrilling,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
I would soak it with PB Blaster, but I would spray it in after the engine cools off.
If you don't drive it over the weekend, spray it in after the engine cools Friday evening.
Then Saturday morning, loosen the injector just a bit and add more PB.
That stuff works good, I would say by Saturday night you will have the injector out.
I would highly suggest getting JB 80 and using it to lube the injector up. It is hard to find but it works miracles. I was working on a Chevy van and had to pull the exhaust on it. I looked at the studs and figured there was no way they would come loose without breaking off. I soaked them down with JB 80 and went home for the day. The next morning I came in and had the manager order new studs as I was sure they would break. I put a 3/8 ratchet on a 20 inch extension and tried to turn them. I was stunned to find all 6 nuts came right loose and the rust dissolved into mush. A good old time parts store should have it.
you need any type of thread lube that "creeps" - conklin's "rust bomb", PB blaster, how about some coke ? you may also have to bump it back and forth and spray some compressed air at it to keep the threads clean as you come up.
I think the problem is a bad copper seal which has now led to a carbon filled head bore encasing the injector.......loosening /disolving the carbon is the only way to remove it. Dave and others have suggested PB blaster and I agree with that... time to disolve the carbon is needed. I personally use Mercury power tune for boats.
Remember to put that cylinder at TDC for removal to stop excessive carbon from entering the cylinder.
i completly agree with soaking it, just thought i would add that working it back and forth some might help break it up. i sometimes find when its getting tight coming out to actaully start screwing the threads back in some and make another try then coming out. not all the way, just maybe a half turn to a turn depending on how it feels, i think it sems to help break up some crud while coming out.
Be advised the threads for the injector parts are same direction as the injector/bore in the head... unscrewing of the injector body is a possibility too. If that happens you will need to unscrew the top of the ijector, remove the injectors insides, then grind off the top threads for the bore.If you screw the top back on and go opposite to normal remove direction (tighten) to break the base of the injector loose from the bore.
