To Start off, I'm not a great mechanic, but I do my own oil changes and can muddle through stuff if I know how it is done. I've never changed the fuel filter in my 91 NA truck, so I'm a little leary about spilling fuel all over the motor, or not getting it back on right, getting air in the system, and not getting it started afterwards. So instead of pulling the fuel filter off and filling it with diesel clean etc. to clean my IP and injectors, I was thinking about running one of the fuel tanks down to about an eighth, then putting, say, a pint of diesel clean in and running it for 5 min or so to get the diesel clean into the system, then leaving it overnight. It occured to me that I might loosen a bunch of sludge in the system and make things worse.
If you guys figure filling the fuel filter with DK is the only way to go, could someone please give me a play by play on the filter removal and replacement, and what to avoid doing.
It's actually not that bad and the filter has to be changed it clogs just like any other filter and if your having a power issue that might be why
It's normal right handed thread
Take it off you can dump the fuel in a clear cup and you will see a little dirt DO NOT use the fuel in the filter once dumped
1) remove filter by rotating counter clockwise
2) throw it away (lol)
3) fill new filter with diesel fuel/ diesel klean
4) install new filter and you will know if it's threading right or not
5) crank it and when it starts hold it about 1/2 throttle and don't let it die (if it does at the worst all you will need to do is bleed the system which isn't that difficult)
I think atf is better at cleaning things out over the diesel kleen stuff. I have added it to new filter changes, let it run a minute, then shut the truck off for a day to let it sit. It has done wonders in cleaning out missing injectors and a pump I almost killed with wvo.
I regularly add the recommended dosage of diesel kleen to every fillup. At walmart you can get a big container for cheap which will treat like 250 gallons.
You are also going to need a big filter wrench, none that I had worked
As far as mess put a throw away rag underneath it, crack filter and spin off slowly with 2 hands and there is just enough room for you to keep it upright and slowly work out of the engine bay. Fill new one mostly up and reverse to install.
I usually dump ATF in my filter I usually fill it all the way just like he instructed no you didnt misunderstand him just make sure it is NOT type F because it's hard on the ip
I get the spin it off, spin it back on thing, but how does the bottom part with that big rubber gasket work. Will fuel run out of that part when it comes off? What secures the bottom of the filter to the base? Is it threaded?
From what I have seen in this forum, after I get the filter filled and back on I should get somebody to crank the motor and I should press the schrader valve on the upper fitting until fuel comes out. Is that right? I'm with you on not burning out the starter.
I've been running Howes in every tank since I've owned the truck (about 20K km/12K miles)
Also, any comments on putting a big dose of Diesel Kleen in the tank and doing the "let it sit overnight" thing that way.
I regularly run diesel kleen and the water separator on the bottom just screw on and off just like the filter take the filter off first and then dump the fuel someplace and then remove the bottom the large dose of diesel kleen I have no clue never done it always have run ATF through when I change the filter and run diesel kleen in the tank all the time (or atleast when I remember lol)
