my fater-in-law wants to convert his 89 F350 dullay to an auto transmission. we know where there is an E40D. whats involved with the swap as far as a cooler and a computer? we figure on a floor shifter in place of the 5 speed shifter to avoid a column swap.

You can use a seperate auxiliary cooler (biggest one you can find), so that is easy to add.
For the computer, you will need to connect it to the VSS (vehicle speed sensor), which you should have at the tranny end of the speedo cable, of not, you can replace the sensor with on that does (if there is a two wire connector next to the cable, you are good to go).
The computer will expect to have an rpm signal as well, if you have a factory tach, all you have to do is spice into that, if not, you will need to replace the IP gear housing with on that can accept an rpm sensor.
You will also need to mount a TPS (throttle position sensor) on the Injector pump (IP), use one from another ford diesel of the same era.
The computer will also need to be hooked into the backup lights and brake lights, a good wiring schematic of both setups would be a must.
The transmission will be of a different length, so the driveshaft will have to be either replaced, or modified, same with the crossmember that supports it.
If you preffer, it is possible to run an programmable aftermarket controller, in my case, there was a little less wiring to do, but it would likely be cheaper if you can find a complete harness and OEM computer from a wercker.
thanks for the info guys. the drive shafts and crossmembers we aint worried about, he has a machine shop. just had the cooler and computer concerns. not sure if the E4OD we got our eye on is in a truck that has the computer and harness or not. its a wrecked part truck. im sure ill have more questions as we go if we decide to go ahead with the swap.
If the donor has eveything you need, I would consider taking the whole truck.
Assuming its not to expencive.
You may also want to consider putting some upgrades in the trans before using it, a shift kit, at the very least, depending on what the truck will be used for.
My 2 cents, stay away from the E4OD. It is a total POS. It is why I'm retiring my '92 and just bought a '85 to replace it. The E4OD has been nothing but problems since, literally, the day I bought the truck.
Don't just take my word for it, do a google on E4OD and then click on groups. You will find just about nothing but guys with problems with the things.
Then ask a transmission shop, they'll agree.
