What is it?
I have 2004 F150 XLT. There is a black plastic thingy with wires going to it mounted behind the rear view mirror. It has some kind of button/switch.

What is it? What is the switch for?

That is the dimmer for the Rearview mirror. So when headlights hit your mirror you don't get blinded. You can turn it off and on.

What is it?
My rear view mirror has no electricity. The wire from the headliner goes to the black thingy. No wires connect with the mirror. The black thingy clips on to the rear view mirror post between the mirror and the windshield.

It is, in fact, the compass sensor.

I believe it's a reset button for calibrating the compass.
