My son and daughter-in-law have a 06 Milan and everything with it was fine till today. He called me and told me that the rear wheels locked up and the car won't move. He said his wife went to drive it and there was a screeching noise, then the car wouldn't move because the rear wheels wouldn't go. Now I'm not anything close to a auto mechanic and didn't know what to tell him. Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this? It was raining and he thought maybe the rear brakes locked up and that may be the cause. What about wheel bearings? Are there any in the rear wheels?
I know this may not be easy but, I'd appreciate any idea from anybody on what the possible problem might be. He said it's not drivable and that one wheel seems to turn very hard and the other drags when he tries to move the car. Can anybody help?
We have a Fusion, same car. Assuming it's not all wheel drive, I'm guessing the parking brake was set and it didn't release. It's never happened on ours, but I've heard of it before. Have him set the brake hard then release it quickly, that might pop it loose. Then get it in to have the cables or the parking brake checked.
I hit a stick in the road once, about 1" in diameter. It kicked up just right so that it got caught between the parking brake cable and the rear axle. Slammed my truck to a dead stop. Make sure there's no debris stuck under the car.
I also say give the parking brake/cables a good look over.
The parking brake locked up on my sisters old sable, of course shes a idiot and drove it home like that, she burnt the pads down to nothing and wore about half the tread off the tires.
how about calling the nearest dealer and having it towed to and repaired there under warranty???
Well of course that's what he's planning on doing. He just asked me if I had any ideas on what it could be. Especially if it was something simple, like the parking brake. He did say he checked that last night and it seemed ok but, I 'll tell him to recheck it.
Problem solved! My son called the dealer and they sent a tow truck to pick it up and they called him later to tell him that a couple of rocks got wedged in between the wheel(s) and the wheel well which prevented them from turning. He lives on a dirt road so, a rock could've easily gotten kicked up in there.
