Service Engine Soon
Anyone know if this is a major concern? The manual says it has something to do with the gas and the gas cap, but if it doesn't go away to take it to the dealer. Any help would be appreciated.
My dad owned an '84 Ranger. Bought it brand new. Granted it's not as new or advanced as your truck, but it was computer controlled. His emissions light came on at 70K miles or so, back then it was basically the same idea as a service engine soon light. It was there to confuse and annoy. He took it to Ford and asked them what his truck was doing. An honest mechanic (lol) told him that his truck was designed by Ford to have this light come on at specific intervals so Ford could look at it. My dad, inturn, would be charged for this service, even if nothing was wrong. The mechanic would simply hook it up to a diagnostic machine then reset the light. My dad then proceded to drive home and unhook the relay. The light turned off and he never dealt with it again, the truck was running great up until my sister wrecked it 4 years ago.
Disclaimer: I've also heard that if you live in a state with a strict emissions system that you have to have this light functionable. In this case, my advice would be to take it in and pay the doof ***** to reset it. Don't let them talk you into anything else and if you have the code reader, check it for codes. If nothing shows up, reset the codes and don't let the Ford mechanic talk you into any service unless YOU think it's absolutely necessary.
