Checking Fuel Pressure

Can I check my fuel pressure by hooking up a hose and gauge to the drain line and opening the valve?

It's possible if you can manage to keep it from leaking. There is a port on the back above the plug for the fuel heater that you can tap into. Much safer that way.

There is a plug fitting on the back side of the top of the fuel filter housing that is commonly used for installing an "under hood" fuel pressure gauge. A couple of site sponsors sell the fitting for this port for about $6 plus shipping (ITP Diesel is one of them). You can then get an inexpensive fuel pressure gauge from a local automotive dealer.
