Smile has anyone ever tried

Hey has anyone ever tried painting a grille with automotive chrome paint? If so what were the results, was it hard to do and where did ya get the paint?

THanks
Matt

Actually I just did my grill and a few other small parts with just chrome spray paint. Doesn't beat out getting something actually chromed but honestly if you sand and smooth the surface alot of people wont tell a difference and the parts still look great.

A steel or aluminum grill can be powder coated fairly reasonalble with the simichrome powder. The Chrome types like Krylon or Dupliclor are not really weather resistant.

Took poor man's approach at reconditioning the alum anadize grill on my 65. The plating shop wanted around $350 to reanodize. Used anadize remover, sanded to 400-600 grit sandpaper. Found I need to seal the alum or it would tarnish in relatively short period of time so I used aerosol can of clear coat. Found it was labor intensive. This was few years back and seems to still be holding up fairly well. If were to do again, I would try the clear powder coat to seal the alum. after sanding and polishing. Considered chroming the alum grill but plater advised otherwise explaining he felt rechoming the soft alum. would gradually show pits, or maring from road debris and suggested going with a metal grill if considering rechoming.

One on ebay that someone did. The pics are small, though:

Here is a pic of my truck as it sits. Painted the bumper, grill and headlight surrounds about a week ago with chrome paint. Came out great in my opinion and I didn't sand all mine perfectly smooth.

Once you get it polished out, spray a sealer on it to preserve it, Or use a good wax. Al oxidize very quickly if grounded to steel. It works like an anode, to keep the still from rusting in High humidity of wet conditions.

Polished aluminum care

If someone were to take the time to fully polish the aluminum grill I'd recommend using Zoops aluminum sealer. The key is to ensure that it is the way you want it to look prior to using ZoopSeal as Zoops will seal in all of your work, good or bad. It cost about $100-120 depending on the kit you get. Eastwood offers it.
