98-02 Ranger Recall
Ford Motor Company has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in the following vehicles that are equipped with speed control (cruise control) systems:
Certain 1998 and 1999 model year Explorer/Mountaineer trucks; certain 1998 and 1999 model year Ranger trucks; certain 1998 and 1999 model year Mustangs; certain 1999 Model Year F-250/350/450/550 (over 8,500 lbs.) trucks and certain 1999 Model Year F-53 Stripped Chassis (Motorhome) vehicles.
SAFETY DEFECT - Speed Control / Stuck Throttle
Your vehicle may be equipped with a speed control (cruise control) cable that could interfere with the speed control servo pulley. This interference may not allow the throttle to return to idle when disengaging the speed control. If you use your speed control and this condition is present, it could result in a stuck throttle, which could potentially cause an accident. By not using speed control, this condition will not occur.
VEHICLE OPERATION
DO NOT USE THE SPEED CONTROL (CRUISE CONTROL) SYSTEM until you have had the speed control cable inspected and if needed, replaced. NOTE: Accelerator pedal function is not affected by this condition.
INTERIM REPAIR
Replacement speed control cables are not available at this time. DO NOT USE THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM until you have had this service performed. In addition, if you anticipate other people will be driving your vehicle who are not aware of this notification, or if you prefer to have your speed control system disabled to prevent inadvertent use, your dealer will inspect, and if equipped with a suspect cable, disable the speed control system, free of charge.
PERMANENT CORRECTIVE ACTION - Replace Speed Control Cable
You will receive a second communication when replacement speed control cables become available in mid-May 1999. At no charge to you, your dealer will inspect the speed control cable and, if necessary, replace it.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
The time needed for this repair is less than one-half day. However, due to service scheduling times, your dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period. Please call your dealer for a service date.
When you bring your vehicle in, show the dealer this letter. If you misplace this letter, your dealer will still do the work, free of charge.
CHANGED ADDRESS OR SOLD THE VEHICLE?
Please fill out the enclosed prepaid postcard and mail it to us if you have changed your address or sold the vehicle.
If the dealer doesn't make the repair promptly and without charge, you may contact the Ford Customer Assistance Center, 16800 Executive Plaza Drive, P. O. Box 6248, Dearborn, Michigan 48121 or call toll free 1-800-392-3673. You also may send a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh Street, S. W., Washington, D. C. 20590 or call the toll free Auto Safety Hotline 1-800-424-9393 (Washington, D. C. area residents may call 366-0123).
We recognize the inconvenience this service may cause you. This action is being taken to ensure your safety and continued satisfaction with your Ford built vehicle.
Yup Ford has finally expanded the cruise control deactivation switch recall # 05s28, to include 98-02 Rangers & other model & years, including the SHO Taurus Rockledge!!!!
BUT I've read that Rangers from 95-03 have the troubled red insulator type swich, why the current years is 98-02 is beyond me.
Why they included the SHO, but excluded other Taurus, like my 94, that ha the troubled switch, is also beyond me, so I guss I'll just leave it disconnected until it's covered.
