The Citgo down the road changed over to BP this morning. I never bought my gas from 'em. Their price was too high.

Well, since you were born in America (as was I), you can think I'm wrong all you want. I'm pretty sure I'm not. The bottom line is that there is a limited supply of gas available to the U.S. Venezuela (Chavez) contributes a fairly significant portion of that gas. If everyone in the U.S. stopped buying it, every other gas company doing business in the U.S. would be short by whatever amount we weren't buying from Chavez. That would either raise the price until demand dropped to meet supply, or the other companies would buy up that unused supply from Chavez and re-sell it. So either we pay a bunch more for gas (supply/demand curves typically aren't linear), or Chavez gets some of our bucks.

I don't go to Citgo either. They changed the one in my area to Valero.

Valero is what used to be Diamond Shamrock many years ago. There have been a number of changes of ownership of that particular corporate entity.

They have done a particularly good job of taking refineries that were marginal, and/or that refined high-sulfur (or other hard-to-refine for today's market) and made them work, and profitably, at that.

Valero is one of the nations largest, if not the largest refiners. It is based in San Antonio, Texas, and is not owned by Chavez.

Valero purchased Diamond Shamrock, and some other entities, and is changing the names on some of the outlets.

A quick web search will verify. jd

jimdandy is correct. Valero is not owned or operated by the little sawed off sumbitch. However, I read an unconfirmed report that states they get 4% of their oil from Venezuela.

Being that Valero is a huge refiner, and being that Venzuela is #4 on oil imports to the US (Canada #1, Saudi #2, Mexico #3) there is no doubt that Valero will process Venzuelan crudes. However, this would be the only connection to Chavez.

The status of oil importers is subject to change and vary with the availability of worldwide supplies. jd
