Unhappy please help wiring a different Ignition Switch

So I am going to try to start the beast (51 F-3 239V8) this weekend and have run into a snag. The previous owner lost the keys but bought a different ignition switch with keys from some guy at a swap meet that said it would work. Yesterday I started to fool with the switches and found that the old ignition switch only has 3 posts on the back and the new switch has 4 posts. So I think that the original switch is a 2 way with a start button and the new one is a regular ignition switch. Now here is where I need help. The old switch has 3 posts
Rad Ga 4 wirers this should be accessory

AM 2 wires Power from batt

Coil 1 wire to energize coil

New switch

Acc Accessory

Ign Wire to energize the coil

Batt power from batt

Start Should send 6v to starting solenoid but this used to be from the starting switch.

<O></O>

How could I wire this to work? Any one have a wiring diagram? Did the 51s have a push button on the dash? Should I buy the right switch and avoid the trouble? I am new to fords and am in need of lots of help.

<O></O>

Thank You

Big Dave in green bay

The original '48-'52 starter buttons grounded the contact on the starter solenoid. The 4-pole ignition switch sends power to that contact, so just don't use that contact at all. Retain the stock button.

That said, many trucks have had later solenoids installed, that use power to energize. Make sure what you have!!! The starter buttons also changed. 2-wire = power type (later model); 1-wire = grounding type (original).

Here's very similar wiring diagram, minor differences to '51:

Ignition wiring

Dave;

If you have a multi-meter; check the contacts of the 4 pole switch; from common point (battery) switch the key to each position and check continuity to the terminals on switch. The fourth pole should be momentary contact only for start circuit. The original three pole; in start/run position, both terminals are hot to common; in accessory mode only the one terminal(accessory) is hot to common. If you are retaining the original start push button, as noted above, make sure you have the correct switch, single or double pole, and connect wire from your run terminal to the start push button ( if two pole) or to the start relay if single pole. This said, I changed my push button to two pole; I did not want to operate starter by grounding the relay circuit.
