I have the moded idm and 6 pos chip from beans. They have been awsome untill the last week when i have had wierd cranking problems. I decided on a whim to smack the e brake real hard and the cel went off and the truck cranked for about 1 sec. Then died. I pulled the chip off, cleaned it and put it back on. No cel light came on so i tried to crank it and then this weird clicking noise came from the #2 relay in the fuse box under the hood. It was a real repeated click and the cel light was blinking with it. So i pulled it all apart tried again but unplugged the chip. It had the same clicking noise. It also made a weird high pitch noise everytime i rehooked up the batteries the first time i tried to crank it. What could cause that noise and not let the motor even turn over. I tried swapping out that relay with some of the other ones in the fuse box, but they all made the same clicking noise. So i cleaned off the chip again, taped the idm and then waa laa, she cranked. She cranked really fast. I turned it off when i got home, and every time i tried to crank, fired up within a couple or seconds, a lot better then it had been doing. So could there be a short in the idm, or maybe some short in the chip? I checked the settings out on the way back, and it was clear (maybe not so clear with all the smoke) the chip was working right. So now I think there is some kind of short somewhere, and i havent got any ideas where to begin. Any suggestions are appreciated.
thanks
I am no expert but with what you said when you tapped the idm and it statred I would lean towards the idm. Usually when the idm goes it is one side or the other but if it is modded then that could be it. i hope not because that is where I got mine at also. Call Beans and talk with them since they sold it tto a they are very helpful and knowledgeabl they will help for sure.
Neal you doubt everything you own that others own and have troubles with, lol.
IDM's are goofy little things. If they act up on ya you'll know it. I cant see the IDM being the culprit cause when they go, they go. If it went out then it wouldn't have worked at all. However, i have heard of another IDM doing the same thing to a guy on this forum. he replaced the IDM and no more issues so there's a first for everything and defiently a second or third for everything that follows. Call Dusty at BDP and explain to him your situation. He'll be able to give you good advice and he'll definetly take care of you if there is something wrong with your IDM. Did you get the Super Duty IDM or the BDP custom 140v IDM?
Thanks guys. I have the bdp 140 idm. I was wondering what could cause that kind of clicking noise? I have never heard a noise like that. It sounded like the new fancy grill lighters that you hold the button, and it just keeps clicking. I am not doubting beans, they have been great, and i love driving my truck even more since doing business with them. I just cant think of anything to explain this.
thanks
So what ar eyou trying to say Steve? That I don't have confidence. Well I do but I hate to hear probs with something that I have also. This truck has been a gem to me and I don't want to jinx it. i still am running the factory shocks and tie rod ends. What can I say.
Yeah Im saying that you worry to much about your stuff goin bad cause somebody elses does. It makes me feel sorry for ya brother. You have quality stuff on your truck, your not the type to cheap out on the important stuff so you'll be fine, no worries. trust me
the idm is under the hood the pcm or ecm whatever you would like to call it is behind the e brake that is where your chip goes just my .02 thereis no chip that goes in the idm
Just wondering if a bad ground could also cause this??? All the terminals look good, but i am going to clean them anyways. I know there is no chip in the idm. i just tapped the side of the idm up against the firewall, but i also recleaned the chip connections inside the truck, so now i have no idea what could have been causing the problems.
thanks for all the help
