Hi,
Easy newbie question. I am hooking up a tachometer to my 390. I need to attach it to the coil negative post. I can not find the label saying "tach," "neg", or anyother markings. All I can find is the main wire going into the center, a red wire going from one post of the coil to one side of the distributer, and a black wire going from the other post into the side of the distributer. So which one is the negative post?
there should be a wire that comes from the ignition switch to the coil, this wire is connected to the positive side of the coil, the other side is the negative there should be a "-" on the coil to indicate negative.

You have points, I guess
The black wire going to the distributor connects to the points inside the distributor - that's the NEG or (-) side of the coil. That's the one that goes to (probably) the green wire to the tach.
Don't take the +12V for the tach from the + side of the coil (red wire).
I just installed the tach. I used the black wire for the coil. I attached the power into the fuse panel open slot beside the fuse. I attached the white wire (for the tach light) into the head light switch, and I grounded the black wire of the tach to the inside fender apron. I mounted the tach at 2 o'clock on the steering column to avoid blocking other gauges. It is working fine. I am glad to finally being able to tell what rpms I am at. Thanks to everyone for your help.
