Tachometer wiring question

So I've browsed quite a few threads on the topic and I understand that the signal wire from the tach needs to go to the negative side of the coil. I've also read that the non tach to with tach cluster is just a direct swap. My question is can I tap into that wire behind the dash without removing the cluster? and how does one find that wire?

So you are doing a cluster swap? I found the tach wire to already be in my cluster wiring. I originally had a cluster with no tach and swapped it out for a cluster with a tach. As soon as I turned on the power, I saw the tach working and I didn't need to move any wires at all. If you have the right cluster to swap in, give it a try.

If the tach wire isn't in your cluster wiring then you should be able to use the wire from the negative side of the coil. If you do have that wire, it should go from the negative side if your coil, into the wiring harness and down to the firewall near where the PCM is located. It goes through the firewall at the large, 84 pin connector to the left of the PCM and once inside the cab, it goes to the cluster.

Nope, I'm trying to wire an aftermarket tach and was hoping to avoid going through the firewall if possible.

I still think you can find the wire. I think the hardest part you will have is actually finding the wire in the mess of wires. As I mentioned, that wire goes through the firewall at the large, 84-pin connector. You can remove that connector but I would suggest you don't - I had a HARD time getting mine back on...there's a bolt and nut that need to line up.

What I would suggest is get a volt meter with a continuity setting and putting one side on the tach wire on neg side of coil and then looking for that same wire just behind the instrument cluster. It's only going to be in one of the two connectors in your cluster. When you find it there then tract it down to where you need as it goes into the firewall and back into the engine compartment. This way you don't need to take the 84 pin connector apart. Good luck

Aftermarket Tach

So I almost didn't buy it but I did and started installing it, long story short I forgot to disconnect the battery and had everyrhing hooked up lights on the tach working. I put the quick splice on and when i started my truck my volt, preasure and temp guage are not reading and from what I can see my fuses look fine. Any suggestions please?
