Help with boost loss
In the last few months, I have lost a lot of power while towing my horse trailer. From other posts I have changed out the air filter and fuel filter. I installed a boost gauge. I cleaned the hoses to/from the IC and monitored for new residue.
Truck is stock..no performance mods at this time. While at WOT, the most I can get on boost gauge is 15 psi. It does not drop from 15, just does not get better than 15. I pulled the red hose from the WG actuator and saw boost rise to 17...still not 24. But wondering if the WG is possible issue.
I could not find instructions on how to adjust the WG. I understand you can adjust the reach by turning the rod, but I'm not sure which direction to turn and when to stop turning.
Also, I was considering replacing all boots/hoses. I tried to pull some off the other day to check for leaks but the damn things would not budge. Is there a trick to getting the old ones off and new ones on?
I do see a bit of oil residue on the two hoses that enter the manifold, but these are harder to reach for cleaning. Can I shoot something at it like engine degreaser or break cleaner w/o damaging anything? I might have a leak there but not sure how to confirm.
Thanks in advance!
On a stock truck, without additional fuel from tuning, you're not likely to make boost over about 17. You won't see mid to upper 20s without more fuel.

You want to effectively shorten the rod that goes from the wastegate actuator mounted on the compressor side of the turbo, to the wastegate arm sticking out of the exhaust side. If you disconnect it from the wastegate arm, and turn it righty-tighty, it should be shorter. Then stretch the rod across to the arm again, and it'll now hold tighter, theoretically. It's likely that the spring in the actuator is weak and leaking boost out early, though.

Use a screw driver between the boot and pipe to pry around them to get them off.

Probably better to use something like Simple Green. Brake cleaner might be a little abrasive for boots. You can also make or buy a boost leak detector like Bob Riley has at www.dieselsite.com - it hooks up to the turbo and reveals leaks pretty quickly.
I thought I saw somewhere that a stock engine should make 24 psi? Bummer if only 17.
I'll try the WG adjust as you described and find a suitable cleaner for those boots.
