wheel size and gears

I plan on putting a 2"rear, 4" front lift and 35" tires on my 86 f150 4x4, will this wreck anything, (tranny, clutch,... etc) this will be mostly driven off road

whats the cheapest way to go, that wont break on me ?

Check your axle tags. It should be something like 3 08 or 3L55. The bigger number the better. If the truck isn't a daily driver, then you could slap on the 35s and wheel in low range. If the ratio is small (numerically) and you drive it everyday, 35s will get old. 4.10s is a good ratio for 35s.

your 4" lift is good for 33's.

a 6" lift is what you will need to clear 35's, (6" in front, 4" in the rear)

you dont need to worry about gears

I can clear 35" on the stock suspension I already checked, the lift is for extra clearance

Ditto they might fit in the wells but the curb at the end of the drive-way will modify them. IMHO if you want ANY kind of power for off road I would go with a minium of 4.56 gears when running 35s. I hate my stock gears with my 32s thinking 4.56 for them.

4.56:2 maybe...... haha jus kidding

4.56 gears are a little high for 32's and street driving...especially if you go in the mud....wheelspeed is your freind...i dont think you would have any problems turning 32's

with my 35 boggers i actually liked the 3.55's more than the 4.10's b/c i had more wheelspeed... matter of personal preference....

that would look pretty gay and preform chitty too...

i had 9" of lift on 35 boggers and i loved it....it could flex like a **** w/o hitting the fenders....

and even if you dont like to flex and only bog....imagine the damage would do to the fenders and your tires if you accidently cross rutted real hard....the tires would go to the hood.....haha

Exclamation

ive got 4.56s on 35's and i wouldnt go any lower - the truck is basically back to stock gearing and pulls on hills without taxing the motor...

and if you dont do gears - id @ least reprogram the computer so it knows youve got bigger tires and then adjust the shift points...

OR - you could just leave it and beat the hell out of it anyway.

35's will fit just fine with no lift, just get out your trusty sawz-all, and cut the sheetmetal back to the body line on that 86... Or, heaven forbid, do a 3" BL

That's a 3" BL and good stock springs all around with 35's on that 84.

4" suspension should clear 35's just fine.
For gearing, keep in mind that being an 86, it most likley doesn't have overdrive, and while stock gearing won't make it rock crawling material with 35's on, it'll work fine off road, and, actually be better on the highway than stock, at least rpm wise. And, really, in low range, 3.55's and 35's are not too bad, decent wheel speed, and decent power. Especially if the truck has a 4 speed.
As for re-programming the computer, even if it has one, at that point in time, transmissions were still mechanical, and the computer had no input as to speed.

oops - my bad - i missed the whole '86 thing...however i do have 4.56s on my '86 too with 33's - but that was mostly in response to an aging motor (240k o.g.) and poor mileage...funny thing is - now shes gettin' 15 mpg - i just dont go over 70mph if i can help it - but - its a 4x4 goin over 70 is what my stang is for!!

9" with little 35"s would look GAY
I know a guy who had a 9" body lift and 44s .... looked like a camo tank
35's will fit on my truck and will not wreck anything with a 4 " lift......
I know about flexing in mud pits...... my brother bogs with his 2 trucks every now and then,... came in first in 2 classes (stock bog, and 30 to 33" bog) beat the clock with both trucks,

hahaha....so the truck in my avatar is gay???? hahahaha......

im not saying anything bad about useing a 4" lift...that would be fine, you just wouldn't get some of the flex w/o some body damage....if you tried to flex a truck with no lift...your better off cutting off the fenders completely...

Not a lot of mud in the rockies a lot of rocks and steep roads. Right now driving into the mountains sucks hsve to be in third to hold speed 55-60 on the hiway.
