how do i find the tdc for my 2.9 which way must the rotor be facing towards the number1 spark plug opening or aligned with the rotor and distributor base mark and the timing marks on the pulley which way does it go
Front pulley with timing marks goes clockwise as your looking at it. Look at the fan blades they should turn so the fan sucks air through the radiator.
Set the pulley timing marks TDC on the pointer. The distributer rotor will either be pointing at number one plug or 180 degrees out. It will be somewhere else if the timing gear/chain has jumped time (bad news) or dist. was not put back in right if it was removed (recoverable).
If dist. was not put in right:
pull #1 plug make sure as you turn crank that #1 is on compression. Keep turning crank unitl timing marks TDC align with pointer. Dist rotor should now be pointing at #1 plug wire. If not pull dist. enough to free rotor notice which way it moves as the rotor disengages from the gear. rotate the rotor so it will point to the #1 plug wire after it goes back into gear. put the dist . cap back on pull the spout connector and set the timing 10 BTDC (87 & 89 Bronco II). Hope you haven't jumped time and all goes well.
