4.0 with a 2.9 intake
I have a 88 bronco ii with a oil burning 2.9.
Is it possible to use a 91-92 4.0 and put
the intake and distributor from by 2.9 on it.
On a engine stand it's tough to tell these
engines apart. I'd like to replace this engine,
a rebuild is out of my budget and there's alot
more 4.0 around.

The 4.0 does not have a distributor - coil pack ignition only, which means you will need to also change over the EEC module and all the associated wiring, plumbing and sensors (MAF, MAP, etc.). As for the manifold, it may bolt up but I'd be willing to bet there are internal differences between the two which may throw off the engine performance.
All this is going to cost something, either time or money. If the current engine is only in need of a re-ring job, these can usually be done cheaper and quicker than an engine transplant.
