I thought that also with I was in college. You pay all this money for books than can't get nothing back. The old edition usually worked anyway and professors often told us that, but it would be harder to follow our syllabus when it came to page numbers/chapters and what not. And also, sometimes it didn't need a book if the professors gave us good notes. Not really a scam persay, but it seems like books get outdated so quick and they make new editions, so they can't give a very good price back or won't take them back so you are stuck. So yes, a scam and a very good one also. The price of books should be cheaper when they know a new edition will come out next year and I'm sure they know.

my 3 daughters (I) spent plenty on books that often didn't get used in the course. If they sell them back, they get about 10% of what they paid for them and they get sold again........I'd like to have a scam like that going
Yeah i got lucky. Where i go to school i take the automotive courses they all use the same book. That book was like $80 used and its kinda screwed up. It got wet at some point so the first 3-4 chapters are slightly warped.

Cape 250 is correct for sure. My daughter graduates this year and the book scam does exist and it is truly a scam.
Wow I feel incredibly lucky. I have one full year left and my school rents us the text books we need for fall and spring semesters (hands em too us, we pay for em at the end of the semester if we wanna keep them). Summer school we have to buy em though, but they give us maybe 50% back if I remember correctly.
I dont sell the books back. I keep them as reference material. They come in handy from time to time....And mom pays for it so it dosnt affect my bank account.
So long as you have the ISBN, you can search down used copies for good ("better") prices. One place you should start looking is www.half.com
This is an excellent link. I just checked out the book i bought used for $80 at school, i couldve gotten brand new for $60. Not bad. Furthermore, my school wants the same book for about $120 new! Im now considering hustling some books at my school.
scam...yep...my last semsester in college it cost $875.00 in books and I could of sold them back for a whopping $80.00, so I kept them and have my students use them.
During grad school I used e-bay and amazon a lot and found the books A LOT cheaper.
Ahhh, brings back memories. At least you guys have the net to source used materials- try doing it in the 80's. My Mark's Mech Eng handbook was close to $150 & yes I still have it!
