I'm not really interested in spend $x00 on a tuner but wouldn't mind trying to get my stock v10 tuned for firmer shifts, better mpg, lower octane, bigger tires...
Are the tuners "helper" devices that must always be plugged in, or do they simply re-program the PCM - a one time thing?
If so, anyone in the Minneapolis Minnesota area want to make a few bucks doing a tune for me?
Most gas tuners are designed to be plugged in to upload a tune and then unplugged. There are a couple that can be left attached which allow you to monitor certain sensors while driving.
All of them that I'm aware of can only be used on one vehicle at a time -- so you'll probably have some difficulty in finding someone to 'loan' you a tune unless you just want to try it out for a short time and then set it back to stock. In other words, once you use a tuner on your vehicle it will not allow you to tune a second vehicle until you return the first one to its stock settings.
Can you imagine how Superchips (et al) could stay in business if they made a tuner in which the ONE buyer then made all the money tuning multiple vehicles?? It makes perfect sense to me that a tuner would only be for 1 vehicle at a time.
Do you feel the same about chips? Not sure how one would accomplish a chip in different vehicles...

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm a software guy so I understand the "pirate" thing.
But my mind set has always been "restrict a logical product" like software that can be copied, but "open a physical product" like hardware where it can't be duplicated and must be shared. The physical nature of the device limits too much sharing.
Can you imaging a TECH II scanner that could only be used on one vehicle!?!?

The tuners VIN lock to the vehicle being tuned. Of course you can only tune one at a time. My SCT SF VIN locks to my truck but I can still read DTCs of other trucks without turning my truck to stock. You are also limited to how many times you can turn your vehicle back to stock before you have to send it back to the company to get it unlocked. (5 times for SCT)
