SCT tuner question

So I want to pull the trigger on an SCT tuner. Along with that I would like to use one of Gearhead Performance tunes. On Ebay there are several "unlocked" USED tuners selling in the range of 150-200$. The single tune is 75$ from GHP, so how does that work, if I already have the tuner do I buy the tune, somehow upload it to the SCT device and then to the truck? I can buy a preloaded SCT tuner from GHP but its 450$...Just trying to save a couple bucks

I don't have an SCT but I do believe you purchase the tunes (after they get truck info) and upload them to the tuner then the truck. Should be an easy process. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Get the tuner. Call Gearhead and they will want the serial number of your tuner along with the strategy that is in your truck. They will e-mail you the tunes, you load them on the tuner and then do burnouts.

Well did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?

You do own one so I would hope you know how to use it.

Plug the unlocked tuner into the OBD port, it will tell you whats on the PCM. If it won't read the PCM, then that would mean the tuner is locked and a paper weight for you. It would need to be paired to the truck that used it last to unlock it.

If you buy a tuner used or new, when plug it in there is an option to retrieve the vehicle information. It will give you the strategy.

Anyone know how to clear strategy codes from a SCT tuner? I was given a SCT without any tunes. When I plugged it in to retrieve the strategy code it shows 3 codes. Not sure how to determine which code is mine.

Are you referring to having 3 tunes (vice codes) in the tuner? On my tuner, three "canned strategy tunes" came preloaded with the tuner, as well as capability to add some custom tunes too. Mine is an SF3 model.

All that's on the package is SCT 3000. I don't think so. Try to download the tunes and get "not correct vehicle strategy".

First thing it wants to do when you plug it in is to match the tuner to the truck before it will do anything. Sounds to me like your tuner is locked to another trucks strategy, it won't work for you until you give the stock tune back to the other truck.

You can have it reprogrammed by SCT. They will clear the old stuff and re-flash it for you, but cost is nearly the same as a new tuner. Find the guy who you got the tuner from and ask if he tuned his truck with it, it will only work on one truck at a time.
