Axle Pivot bushings?

So I am getting some horrible clunking in my 88 when I do just about anything, turn, brake, hit a bump. It is coming from the front end and you can feel it in your feet. So I crawled under it and noticed that my axle pivot bushings are almost gone. I believe I am calling them the right name. If you follow the I-beams to the frame it is those bushings that connect the beams to the frame. Is it a common thing for these to go out? Anyways, I am pretty sure I am going to have to rip off most of the front suspension to get to them. My repair manual says special Ford tools are needed. Can I get by without them? Has anyone done this before and if so do you have any tips or pointers. Thanks!

Are you talking about the bushings that are in the center of the truck, just underneath the engine crossmember? Those are the axle pivot bushings. If its the ones, that run parallel with the frame, from the front wheel back, those are the radius arm bushings.

I have a post on replacing those if you search the forums, and made my own tool to remove them, should be a link to my pics at superford.org in that thread. You could also rent a balljoint press to change them out, JSM84

Here's the thread:

Thanks for the link justshootme84. Were your clunking as well when they went out?

Yes, the whole front suspension was worn out. I used all poly urethane bushings. If you go that route, try to find the apb with the metal sleeve. I had to re-use my original sleeves, and that took a few hours to cut out the old rubber. JSM84

So I am looking at getting these two. Which ones would be better? The ones with the metal around them? What is the advantage of that? Here is the link

Or these from summit

Rigt, the SRE ones don't have the metal sleeve. That's what holds the bushings inside the beam. You can re-use the old metal sleeve, but they often get buggered up removing the old ones, especially if you use an air chisel or try to drill out the old rubber and hammer out the remains. The OEM bushings use a very dense, hard rubber. Even on the ones that were worn out, it took a few hours to cut and drill all the old rubber off of the sleeves. A torch would work alot faster to burn them out.

Thats good. I wound up buying some, decided I was too lazy to put them in myself so I had a shop do it. They used the parts I supplied and it came out to $175. Not bad and fixed the clunk!

thats not a bad price if i'd rather fish than do it. thanks for the reply because i was wondering what kind of ridiculous project ( $$ ) they would of made out of it. the parts are 25 beans at the most, so if i do get to where the ocean calms down enough, i may have them do it, if not, the way it's looking down here, i'll have time to tackle it.... if i say it once, i'll say it a million times, the internet comes without a price.
