I have a 2003 7.3 that I tool to a local dealer for a oil change ( they mailed out coupons for a 1.99 diesel change) they proceed to tell me that I needed a fuel filter change and then after telling them it was just changed. There is one on the frame rail that is supposed to be changed also. That is a new one to me. This is my first diesel but I never heard of this. I left wandering if they are full of you know what or is there reallly a second filter. I have already had a run in with this same dealer and if this is a lie. Thats it I may contact out local better bussines burea.
The 6.0L has a second fuel filter on the frame rail, and I think there's a small filter screen at the input of the fuel pump on a 7.3L, which is on the frame rail. Did you happen to ask the dealer why they thought it was time to change your fuel filter?
I'd want to see this frame rail filter. IIRC, Gene's right and there is a screen on the inlet of the stock fuel pump, but I don't think it's something that's replaceable.
IIRC, the 6.0s have a water separator down on the frame rail, which is a real PITA to drain too. One of my co-workers had to drain his at work (office type place) and ended up with diesel down his arm & clothes. That's after hunting around for an allen wrench that would fit in the tight little spot between the frame and whatever's next to it. That's one thing that I'd be swapping out for sure....
