i really want a better engine for my '79 bronco than the 351 it has now. i've seen that alot of you guys have done the 460 swap and i thought about that. i've also thought about doing a diesel swap. my question is for the money and work put in, which is the better swap? i know that the 460 just needs new motor mounts and then its basically plug n play. the diesel would be more compicated but would last longer with more mpg. but would a cummins or a powerstroke bolt to the c6? and would the rest of the drivetrain hold up ok?
I've got a 460 in my 78. The only thing I don't like is the notch in the frame that had to be cut for the exhaust manifolds. If you go with the 460 I have been told that their are headers you can buy that will eliminate the need to notch the frame.
i thougtht some f-350s came with C6s behind their powerstrokes? if i did have to change the tranny, would the np205 still be ok? how about the 9" and the dana 44 stock?
the 460 and deisal tranny bolt pattern are different. the axle would hold up better to a 460 but still be the weak link. if you ran a diesal you would need 3/4-1 ton axles for sure.
instead of swapping in an entirely new engine, have you considered stroking the 351? It would be cheaper, easier, and you would make more power than a stock 460 and get better mileage. Just a thought... a 393 would be really nice.
