I have a 1990 Bronco with a 302, 4.10 gears, and 31 inch Firestone All terrain tires. I have been getting 13 miles to the gallon. Is this normal I thought it was a little low. What can i do to improve it. Thanks.
with those gears and tires yes. you could probably bump up to a 33" tire and get a little better mileage but not much. a good tune up with basic copper autolite or motorcraft plugs, ford 9mm or taylor plug wires and new cap/rotor and bumping the timing up to 12*btdc with spout connector removed to set timing should help as well. once timing is set put spout back in when truck is off. have battery disconnected for 10mins then reconnect and drive for 30mins in various conditions like city and hwy so computer relearns.
Pretty much the norm for 4:10 rears . I had same but 3:55 and got 15 MPG on Interstate trips. Like said you are set if want to run 33" tires. The 4:10 rears are really hard to find any more. I pick them up when I find em.
I got the K&N and cant tell much. An MSD box made the most differnce for me. Now Summit makes a simalar box much cheaper. It may be the same. Summit usally gets some name brand company to make all their products. I have a thred on this subject, you can see all the things I did and what it got me.
kemical, wouldnt he be better off setting his timing to about 13.5* BTDC and then regapping a new bunch of motorcraft coppers to .055? Im pretty sure that you dont really see gains from all of those mods to give you better spark unless you regap them as well.
Oh, also, I would personally get a new ignition as well.
So I will mostly likely need a set of new Motorcraft Coppers, a MSD box or one from Summit Racing, new plug wires, and a timing change. Am I forgetting anything? and is there anything else I should do?
the reason i said 12 on the timings is after that you have to adjust in small amounts to keep from pinging (detonation). some 302s can handle 13.5* while others wont see more then 11.5*. but yes if he bumps it to that then he will want to regap his plugs for sure. you can run autolite copper plugs as well to if they are easier to get.
