I read a lot of threads here and guys are wanting to make clouds of black smoke with their trucks for some reason. Why is this? Is there a reason for wanting this to occur other than to look like an old filthy school bus? Does the black smoke indicate the truck is running strong? I dont get it. What am I missing here?
I think it looks awesome. I was behind a duramax the other day on a split four lane road and when he punched it to go around a truck he completely blacked out all four lanes. It was one of the coolest things i have seen.

Most of the reason people want to make black smoke is becuase they think it looks cool or they want to smoke out the people beside them.
At max load on a diesel engine the quanity of fuel injected per cylinder is still at 50% Stoichiometric lean. So you can add more fuel to the cylinders which creates black smoke and more Hp & Torque. The black smoke is do to incomplete combustion, because the air fuel mixtue is not in the cylinder long enough to completely burn the fuel even though there is still an excess of air/O2 present in relation to the amount of fuel present (Stoichiometric lean). The downside is your fuel mileage decreases and your soot & particulate emissions increase at this point. Generally the only diesel engines you see making black smoke on purpose (other than those wanting to show off) are Drag trucks and Pulling tractors/trucks. The extra Hp & Torque is more important to them than MPG or emissions. You can also get black smoke if the injectors are worn or leaking.
Personally I'd rather utilize all that unburnt fuel escaping my tailpipe. The more fuel you utilize the more HP gains you'll see. If you pay for the injectors you might as well utilize their fullest potential.
I can understand the black smoke need by some, but I personally would be embarresed by it. To have this beautiful truck billowing out black smoke would make most people think what a piece of crap! Its like seeing a hot beautiful girl with a bangin body and then she rips one.
You guys are crazy. Black smoke is awsome. It's awsome to beat one of those little rice burners with your 8000lb truck and throw some smoke in his window at the same time. Just my thoughts on the subject!
generally black smoke means the vehicle is making power. there is an excess of fuel.
and yes, when you're making the smoke, the truck is MOVING..
now when you've got a big *** turbo, and you're still making black smoke, you are FLYING !
