My mother in law has an 02 with 98,000 miles on it. Tranny went out at 76,000 and the rear end is out now. We made the mistake of buying a 05 exp. new and it has been a P.O.S. No more new Fords for me. They just don't make them like they use to
Uhm when was the last time the fluid was changed, and if so what shop did the service. I am under the impression that they have improved over the older ones.
You can have the trans serviced at any point.
10k 20k 30k.
I wouldn't wait till 100k.
Any "early service" wont hurt anything it might even save your trans.
Is any new car any good?
I have a 04 Ex and I just ignore it, and drive it.
The CD doesn't work.
The trans does whatever it feels like, whenever it feels like it.
The rear end is noisy.
I hope you got the extended warranty.
I wanted to dump this one but the GF likes it so she drives it.
Ive bought Fords for 25 years, never a problem till I bought a Lincoln LS.
The doors filled up with water whenever it rained, all 4 did.
The headlights did the same.
The thermostat broke in half, had to get a tow.
The master cyclinder failed.
Last but no least the cops failed, $1500.
Dumped it at 65,000mls for this 04 Ex.
As soon as the warranty is up on this 04 its gone too.
The later model Explorers are not bad cars, they're actually nice looking cars with a decent ride and ok mileage, but the transmissions and the rear ends do tend to break a lot.
Its no wonder that Ford stock is less than $9.00 a share.
What is Ford thinking? Does Toyota secretly own Ford and is using them to become No.1.

Couldn't agree more. Bought a new chevy in 03-junk. Traded it for a ranger-decent truck. Traded it for the EX-total P>O>S. Hate to admit it but my next new car will be an import My daily driver is a 96 PSD and I love it. Why don't they make them like that anymore???
The dealer told me the tranny service wasn't required until 100K and that they had to put it on a computer to do it.
That dealer was full of crap! Changing the fluid in the Explorer (and actually, most Automatic Transmission vehicles) is a good thing to do every 30,000 or so miles, it will extend the life of any transmission. As far as the "having to have it on the computer" to change the fluid, also BS. The Ford TSB that covers the fluid fill on these mentions the use of a diagnostic tool to ensure that the fluid is at operating temperature when checking the level... but that's about it.
Having said all that; Ford had some issues with the trannys in the 3rd Gen Explorers (mine is an '02 as well), mine had to be rebuilt @ 60,000 miles... the newer ones should fare better, as improvements have been made... dumb@$$ me went and bought the first year redesign, never a good idea! The rear end is also a known issue from the early years of the 3rd Gen; ford has revised the design of the diffs on the newer ones to solve the problem.
For the record, I've never, ever had a totally troublefree vehicle of any make, Japanese or otherwise; they all have their weaknesses... it's all about how much the replacement parts cost for me.

I agree 100% it all comes down to which body style do you want.
I prefer the Explorer.

all automatics should have the transmission oil changed at 30-40,000 intervals. i did that on our 2002 EXP at 40, and again at 80,000. about 85,000 now and i think its great. Wifes daily driver. Nice little truck.
