Front axle PROBLEM

OK, so I made the mistake of trying to change my front axle fluid today. Now I need some help. Is there any way to get my inspection cover all the way off or back on without removing the axle? My truck is a '98 4x4 with IFS.

The best way to change the oil is to pump it out thru the filler hole (leave the cover on). The hand pumps are not expensive....

I realize that now, but it's too late. I didn't figure that there was no way to get the cover off without moving the axle. I'd like to find the engineer that designed this setup and hurt him. I've changed diff fluid on tons of other vehicles and have never seen anythng like this. I always like to take the cover off to inspect the gearset and check for debris on the bottom of the case, I never thought I would be in for a surprise like this.
