HELP! I'm so happy to fine this sight as I've been looking for some help on using my 03 Ranger FX4 w/ 4.0 lit engine for towing a 5th wheel trailer. I've found a "Rockwood" Ultra Lite 23 ft. 5th Wheel camper that is within the weight limits for my Ranger. (trailer 5146 lbs) GVWR "Truck limit = 5180lbs GVWR". My problem is, I can't fine a Hitch mfg. that makes a fifth wheel for Rangers. Does anyone have any suggestion on this or that has used a Ranger to pull a 5th wheel. Thanks for any help. Tut
I do. I have pics in the gallery. I tow a regular terry resort 24' fifth wheel. 4100 dry weight. Its a Reese Boss 15k head on the bed mounted rails. And I believe it's the universal reese mount kit. I can try and look it up as we installed the hitch 7 years ago.
A 23' fifth wheel is actually only as long as a 17-19' travel trailer.

your going to have more problems if ya do find one....thats way pushing the limits. its not just the towing part, but how much payload can actually go into the bed between the hitch and trailer??
he is talking about a fifth wheel that is specifically designed to be light in the nose for mini pick ups like the ranger. you are gonna hafta check with your local RV shop, and they will be able to get you the right mounting kit.
This 23 footer is going to tow so nicely, you aren't going to want to go to a straight trailer ever. That being said, make sure your are going to have the desire to keep a pickup truck in your family. the one downfall to a fifth wheel is your need a pickup truck, whereas a travel trailer any Truck, Van, or SUV with towing capabilities will do.
My 1999 ext. cab 2wd is rated for 1660 lbs. of payload. full tank of fuel at 200 lbs, and 2 adults at an average of 215 lbs. each leaves 1000 lbs. of available safe payload, just store all your gear in the camper. his 4x4 may be lower by a bit.
I am guessing this is what he is referring too. 746 lbs of hitch weight. Thats the same as a quad and cooler in the bed. Or just a larger utility quad. Also about to be mentioned is the wet weight. if you look at the floor plan, the freshwater tank is over the axles, and the gray/black water tanks are behind. Plus I haven't met anyone who tows with full tanks except on very rare occasions. and not usually full.
