Talk about useless info! For all the replies on this thread there is next to no useful info!

The original poster was asking for the largest diameter tire that would fit on a stock suspension.

I should know, I was the original poster. Any info on that point?

like i said, i have 305/45/22's. its a 33" tire. it's 12" wide. again, depending on your wheel offset and backspacing, i wouldn't go any wider or taller either. i have all stock suspension except for the v springs. and i get absolutely no rubbing. although its super close when the wheel is turned to full lock. hope that helps...

oh, and then at least you use your truck for what it was built for then....

The "new" tire sizes are based on a metric/percentage/inch system. Yeah. I know.

First, if the tire has a "P" in it, it a Passenger-vehicle rated tire. If it has an "LT", it's a Light Truck-vehicle rated tire. I can't give you a good technical explanation of the difference between the two, but there is a difference. Good question for a tire man.

Now, about the numbers (I'll use your sizes for example):

305/70-16 or 285/75-16

305 is millimeters, and determines the HEIGHT of the tire. (That is, the "Section Height"..from the tread surface to the bead (inside edge/diameter).

70 is percentage, and determines the WIDTH of the tire.

16 is inches, and is exactly the INSIDE DIAMETER of the tire, thus the diameter of the rim that fits.

Not trying to stir things but....................this is not exactly correct!

The 305 is millimeters but it dtermines the width NOT height of the tire. The tire tread is 305 mm's wide.
The 70 is a percentage but it is a percentage of the tread width and is used to determine the sidewall heigth. 70% of 305mm is 213.5mm. The sidewall of the tire is 213.5mm in heigth.
The 16 is indeed the rim diameter.

Try this if I did'nt expalin it very well............

Emptyd, I have a 2001 Ex 4X4 with a 7.3L Diesel. It has 3.73 gears and the suspension is stock. I have Goodyear Wrangler LT275/65R20 tires that look great and perform well. Only at the locks, they rub the plastic fender well a little.

OK ONE MORE question, I will try to post it here, I have a 03 Excursion, XLT, 2wd, stock, and I want a wide tire, so with that in mind, I am looking for the tall wide look, what is the best tire size in your all opinions with out any concerns of tire rub, and not having to lift it, and here is the kicker, i am planning to put in 4" exhaust in the near future, and I know sometimes that if the tires are big the exhaust may become close, Am I right??
thanks

I'll keep buying Goodyears's, but if I had a set of Revo's on a truck I bought, I'd run 'em ragged and I'm sure they'd do a good job for me.

Firestone's? -- I wouldn't use their best tire for a watering trough in my yard! I wouldn't MAKE a good dog drink outa something like that even if he was thirsty to death!

Is there really a difference since Bridgestone Firestone North America manafacture Revos that you would run ragged and also the Firestones that have not even earned a place in your yard. Not to be a jerk but it seems you would find both equally acceptable or unacceptable due to make actually being the same.
