I have a 2003 Expedition Eddie Bauer Edition with 50,000 miles.
I've noticed that when I reach about 55mph I hear a loud humming noise in the cabin. I know it's related to the acceleration, as when I take my foot off the pedal the noise goes away. When I press the pedal the noise becomes present again. It seems to only occur 55mph to 60mph and then goes away.
Very well could be the rear end. If it is, the sound has a weird way of transferring to the front of the vehicle, sounding like there is an engine problem. Had this happen in an F-250 once and you couldn't have a conversation with a passenger over the noise.
If you have a 5.4, they have a subtle engine roar in the rpm range at the speed you were talking about that occurs when the engine is under any kind of load. I notice this in my '99 F-150, my wife's '06 Expy and my Dad's '05 F-150. It could be this as well.
