won't crank

Hey Guys,
'96 F150, suddenly won't crank. Batt is fine. terminals/connections
clean. had been running fine. turn the key everything comes on.
go to start, i hear a click - like the relay - but no starter motor.
took a screwdriver and shorted across the relay, and to my surprise,
nothing. not the faintest spark. maybe it's wire in a more complex
way than it appears - or I'm just too old school! don't have a book
on it, just shade treein' it.
thanks for any help.
Steve

Need to have someone jump the relay like you did while you check for voltage at the starter where the hot wire connects. If you are getting power to the starter and it does not turn, I would say the starter has crapped out.

Sounds like you have a bad spade connector on the Starter Solenoid.
The Starter Solenoid is mounted on top of the Starter like on a GM.
The one on the fender is a relay and not a solenoid.

You need to cut back about one inch of wire and crimp on a new spade connector.

rain kept me out from under it last night, but go to it tonite
and you were exactly right. The spade connector was loose
and the mating terminal dirty. Wire looked ok. So I cleaned
all and tightened spade. Worked fine.
Thanks again for your help.
Happy and safe travels,
Steve

Nice. I had a similar problem with my 1990 but looks like you've been taken care of. I'd turn the key and get a single click and all the guages would drop to zero. Checked the battery on the charger and everything was good, so put it back in...nothing.

Fusible links hide right next to the battery. I had a loose one. Stuck em all back together and good to go.

I found the best thing for those spades is to smear them with "Lubriplate" white lithium grease after cleaning them and slide them back and forth together a few times, then covering them as best you can with a coating of the grease.

This seems to keep the moisture displaced because the Lubriplate seems to draw into the connection and protect it.

Sounds like a good idea. I don't have any white, but I do have
some electrical contact spray cleaner/lube which I may try. Also have a
tube of contact protector that is for stopping oxidation of AC power
connections, which is probably more durable.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Subford,
May I ask where you got the wiring diagram?
Are they available on the web somewhere?
Thanks,
Steve
