I am planning to lift my 72 F250 hiboy to the sky. I have the original 360 with a 4speed and divorced transfer. I am wondering if I would be better off to build a 390 or to go with a 460. I know that a 390 would bolt right in, but it appears to me that 460 preformance parts are more available and maybe a little cheaper. Any ideas???? Thanks.
Good question. I have a '76 HiBoy that had a pretty stout 390 in it when I bought it. This included edelbrock aluminum heads, ebrock intake, stout cam, holley 750etc. I am not one to be satisfied powerwise but I'd have to say the truck is more than surprising with 33's and 4.10 gears. An honest estimate would be 400hp and 425 ftlbs. Now, I lifted it and put 38" Swampers on it and it's still ok, but the lack of pure torque is more evident. I could put new gears in but then I miss the easy cruising speed. Yes, I do offroad it quite a bit and with low range there's more power than you'll ever need. If you're planning 38" or below, the 390 should be fine if you put the right parts in it, beyond that size I'd go through the trouble of installing a 460. One thing to think of, the $ used to install a 460 is kind of offset because you'll have a lot more $ in a 390 to make it run anywhere close to a 460. Also, you'll never come close to the torque of a 460, believe me when I say you need it with the big tires.
