Y block to AOD

I have a Bendtsen's adaptor on order to put behind a 292 y block in a 55 f100. Now I need the transmission. What years and models are the best donors? What is the best way to replace the rear motor mounts?

Ron, Ive been told the '89-'92 AOD trannies are the ones to get. I BELIEVE if its going to be rebuilt, then the year shouldnt matter cuz you can have the upgraded parts used in your rebuild.

I agree with fiddysixF, as the older ones had issues. As for models, I've also read the MN12 Tbirds have different shifting points(gears) than F-series trucks. But,if yer like me, ya take what ya can get. Rear motor mounts or tranny mount?

I'd REALLY like to know how well this works AND how you deal with the engine mount issue.

I have an E4OD that I'd like to adapt to my 292. Actually I'm going to find another one since mine is for a super duty diesel (I'll use it as a core and sweet talk the rebuilder into giving me a small block type E4OD built like the diesel model)

The Superduty E4OD is required because I need the trans mounted parking brake and a transmission that cam out of a 15,000 GVW truck. I also want the 0.71 OD and locking converter!

Cheers,

Rick

I know I will have to come up with a transmission mount. I found a good one in the files here. What I am unsure of is the motor mounts. The truck engine mounts consist of a front center mount and the side mounts are a part of the bellhousing. The transmission adaptor doesnot provide for these mounts.
Do I pitch the front mount and go to car type mounts?

Take a look at the LMC Truck parts catalog. I think they have mounts and cross members etc in there.

I'll have the same problem if I use the E4OD. I'll need to use the side engine mounts and a home made cross piece in the back. (I have the original cross piece from the superduty that the E4OD came out of....I can probably modify that..)

If you'll head over to the Y Blocks Forever website there are some great tech articles on this exact conversion, and more than a few qualified people to discuss it with.Me,I'm unqualified to greet @ Walmart.Steve.

Ron, you still fooling with that thing? I have the adapter and it's all bolted together temporarily. Everything fits well!

I think the best bet is to use the side mounts and and the rear trans mount. Bendtsen also said it would work well to build a mid mount for additional support.

More to come (pix in the gallery!)

Cheers,

Rick

Ron, I bought the 292 Bell housing from Mummert,(which came from Bendtsens). Igot the one that is made for trucks with the rear engine mounts and bolted it up to a 68 C4. It all went together great. Is there a difference between the C4 and a AOD as far as boltingto the new bell housing. I have pics in my gallery of my 58F100.

Rarity?

Hey guys,
I am a new member and have not one Ford in my lot, but my buddy just bought a 1955 F-100 with Ford-a-matic and a 239 CI OHV. Anybody know how rare they are or how many were produced?

Howdy,

I think they probably produced a fair amount of Fordomatic pickups. Not nearly as many as with a stick probably. If he decides to remove the fordomatic and put a stick in it, tell him I'll buy the steering column. I am not having much luck finding one of those to put in my F-600! (Of course they NEVER made an automatic F-600!!!)

Cheers,

Rick

Hi Vern,

I think Bendtsen told me that the C6/AOD/E4OD for a small block engine will work with the adapter I have. I wouldn't even attempt to use bell housing mounts (by themselves) The transmission is just too heavy If you do that make sure that you put the tailshaft mount on there and use a cross member.

I don't think the C-4 would work with this one. The C-4 evidently has a removable bell housing. The C-6/AOD/E4OD all have integral bell housings.

Regards,

Rick
