Timing Mark on '96 5.8?

Timing Mark on '96 5.8?

I just bought a 1996 F250 w/ the 5.8 and the engine 'pings' during acceleration and climbing hills. The timing should be 10btc with the Spout disconnected. All I see for marks are the ring (for a mag pickup?) and a single groove on the balancer, no pointer or degree marks. So how does one check the timing?

The groove is not the mark. Clean it with sand paper and you will see the #s. As far as the pointer, its the flat/straight part to right of the ring. Some may disagree but my truck runs better at 12-13 deg. 93 351W.

I clean mine sand clean grooves and paint then sand off lightly to see marks. I also for my truck runs the best and best MPG at 12 deg

Thanks... I got it!!!

Whoa, one has to really look to find that "hidden" pointer and shoot the light in the tiny 'window' down between the serp belt and tensioner. Also like ya'll said, had to sand the balancer to find the, still, hard to see degree marks. Seems Ford barely stamped this balancer, but I marked the 10 spot and the dist was off slightly. Now all is well and no pinging!
