Clicking Front Hubs?

Clicking Front Hubs?

Went out for a little off road fun tonight, and when I was pulling back onto the road in a sharp turn (steering wheel turned all the way to the stops and in 2WD), there was a clicking/thumping coming from the front end. I unlocked the hubs and the noise went away, so I am sure it is coming from the hubs. Is this normal, or are the hubs going bad? I have manual hubs and shifter. TIA!

I don't think that the axle/steering joints like it when you go to full steering lock when you're hubs are locked. It puts too much angle on the axle joints. You might take a look and see if you did any real damage. Just keep in mind not to go to full lock while your hubs are locked. I haven't done this with my Ford but I have experienced the noise you described with my Toyota. It does normally happen when your hubs are locked and you go to full steering lock but it's not a good thing. Try to avoid this.

Ok, that sorta what I was thinking. It is very smooth and quiet when I am going straight or turning normally but only got noisy when I went to full lock, so I had a feeling it had to do with angles and such. Thanks!

I have inadvertently and unknowingly had my hubs locked (crappy ESOF plastic....) and my front end was very smooth.

However, I have seen issues with the u-joints starting to go bad and binding at steep angles like steering lock. May want to keep and eye on them, or jack up the truck and see if one side does it more than the other indicating a real problem, not just a design limitation issue.
