I would like to put a oil temp gauge in my 1990 f-150 with the 302 engine is there any kits for this or what?what would the normal temp range for the oil in my truck?
I have no idea--I would suspect that a speed shop would have something to give you a engine oil temperature gauge set up--they must have them for the 5.0 Mustangs.
And I too --would be interested in what the normal range of oil temperature would be in one of these trucks.
There is more information and experience on this website than anywhere else for these old trucks of ours!!
A speed shop like Summit or Jeg's definitely would have several oil temp gauges to choose from (Autometer, Stewart Warner, and the like). You would need to mount the sender (or the probe if it's mechanical) in the oil pan so that it is submerged in oil while the engine is running. I would think that oil temps of 220-230F would be about normal. For conventional oil, I'd be afraid for it to be higher than 240F or so for any extended length of time. I have no idea what oil temps these trucks usually see, though.
Thanks guys for the info,I wanted to put a remote filter kit and thought maybe they had a threaded port to mount the temp sender?I really hate to put a hole in the pan.
I brazed a fitting into the oil drain plug hole and use the temp sending unit for the guage as my drain plug. The oil normally runs a little hotter than the water temp, but when I first put it in and began towing it ran up to the 280 mark. I added an auxiliary Ford racing oil cooler in the line with the filter. That brought the temp down. now it seems to run about 220 even when towing. I got my guages for the engine oil and transmission oil (added a bung in the trans pan for the sender -- that provided a drain for the ATF next time it gets changed) from JC Whitney.
