292 question

Hi, I notice that the '58-'60 292 air cleaner decal says 172 HP, and the '61-'64 says 160 HP. Does anyone know what made these 292's different in horsepower between the years? I was just curious as to what changed. Thanks,
Kenny

I believe heads (i.e. compression and valve size) were the major difference.

292 question

I don't know if you guys know, but I'm planning on getting a 292 to rebuild to replace the one in my '64 f-250; and so you're saying that I should get an earlier one? I've found a rebuild kit, with all the gaskets, seals, and internal components, but do you guys have any tips on rebuilding one of these vintage 8's?

292 question

Andrew, I don't know anything about the differences between the years, except for having a difference of 12 HP, and what Nathan just taught me. If 12 HP is going to make a difference, I suppose I would go with an older one. Nathan could probably answer you better on that one. I have never personally rebuilt one of these. I do have an original 1959 Ford Truck Shop Manual with all kinds of torque specs, pictures, and instructions for assembly and disassembly of the 292. If you need anything in particular, I would be more than happy to look it up for you.

Any good head shop can put the larger valves in your heads. From there its how much $ you want to spend for how much HP. I prefer the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) method of engine building. Clean everything well, get the big valves if you want, and build for reliability. Start putting in wild cams and high comp pistons and such, and you run the risk of early failure. My 351 rebuild currently had about 90,000 mi on a rebuild, and shows no signs of dying any time soon, and I dont exactly drive it like grandma going to the store, either! Good luck!

292 question

I'm planning on a stock rebuild, I may end up rebuilding a 312 to put in; if I can find one..., Either way, it will be a stock rebuild with a bigger carb, a mild cam, a valve job with hardened seats, and possibly slightly larger valves, and a gear driven timing set (Again, If I can find one; I really like that blower sound!) So, a reliable, yet slightly performance-oriented engine. I might add an electric fuel pump as well.

Any ideas/opinions? I'd love to hear 'em!
