I read a thread on this site (I believe) about the vulnerabilities of the doors on late model Ford trucks. Hell, I read so much, from so many sources; this information may have come from anywhere. But I believe I found it here. A long time ago. To the point, it worried me but I didn't do anything.
A few recent incidents got me thinking. So, here's my question: What steps have you taken to protect your truck? By "protect" I am mainly interested in aftermarket anti-theft devices. But I am interested in other steps you've taken, as well.
I have a 2005 F-350 Lariat. I am looking for suggestions, prices (if available) and relative effectiveness. No suggestion is too basic.
I had ford install a "factory" alarm which came with a remote start. cost right around 375 installed and took about 1 hour. Nice factory remote and everything just plugged in to wiring harnesses
On top of that i'm thinking about adding LoJack. Seen it used and have used it. works incredibly.
I made my own "Revelco" plug. Took about 3 hours of my time and maybe $10.00 in parts instead of the hundreds that it costs for Revelco!! Put on a cheap noise alarm and use the "Club". Works for me....
Thanks, Blackhat. Layered security is the key to securing most things (computers, home, business, etc).
The jimmi jammers was the device I was thinking about. The Ravelco device sounds interesting. I'll look into that and into installing it myself as the poster above suggested. I probably need to look into getting a Lo-Jac, also.
Regarding the alarm, I have the Ford factory alarm (or the dealer installed it pre-sale). It's actually never gone off. And the windows are tinted.
I like me some 1911! But I prefer a pump 12 Ga. If I can't get there with 7 shots from the ol' scatter gun, I have a more pressing problem than my truck. Ironically, I had a Colt 1911 stolen out of an unlocked vehicle about 10 years ago. Still ticks me off.
I have another question. What about the rear slide window? Is there a good device to reinforce the latch/lock back there?
Very sorry to hear about the stolen Colt--but do not lose hope of its recovery. Friend of mine had a custom Springfield 1911 returned to him after its being stolen five years ago. I had to fix the front sight that had been damaged, re-spring, and give it a good cleaning, but it still shoots cloverleafs @ 25 yard with handloads...
Of course, this has NOTHING to do with trucks... so I'm way off-topic. Wait. We took it to the range in a truck... that counts, right?
But to really be on-topic, I admit, I don't do much with security on the rigs I'm responsible for--but then again, they're always staffed, so it's pretty much a non-issue for me.

It's gone, man. But I appreciate the sympathy.
It was custom, alright. It was my late Uncle's service revolver. He was an HPD Homicide Detective. I have weapons and "things" that are so much more "valuable."
I took the front door handle off that has the keyhole in it and replaced it with a rear door handle (my truck only had the keyhole on the driver's door). The key cylinder in the plastic door handle is easily pryed so that the rod conecting it to the door latch will open the door. I have keyless entry and a key pad so I never used the keyhole anyway. Thieves that get in that way do it as fast as if they had a key, therefore drawing no suspicion.
By doing that mod I took the easiest and most common method of forced enrty out of the equation. All other forms of forced entry are louder and riskier.
Jimmiejammers do work but the door will get torn up if some one tries to breakin in.
Nothing you can do about glass breakage.
Best thing is not to leave anything in sight that will temp a thief.
