I have a 1992 F150. 2 wheel drive with a 302 (5.0) and Overdrive transmission. I bought this truck from a (police) Tow lot, auction. Runs great but the transmission would kick in to 2nd hard. As time went by, I would drive it on the highway and I would have to manualy shift to 2nd to keep it from shifting to OVERDRIVE at 20 mph , and plus at speeds of 60, the speedometer would drop to 0 and then swing to 90, sometimes back and forth. Then it would kick back into 1st at high speeds or just plain loose its gear into a slip. I found a wrected truck I bought the tranny out of. The tranny was a rebuild from a credible transmission sales Company, here in Kansas City. I just got done installing the new one, took it for a drive ,,,and I get the same symptons. Is there a computerized situation outside the tranny that Im faced with? Any suggestions sure is welcome. Thanks , From Tom

Check the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) on the top of your rearend. I believe its one 1/2" bolt and the sensor pops off. Check the magnet underneath for metallic remnants and clean away. This little bugger reads your speed from the ribbed ring that sits adjacent to your differential and spins with your rear axles.
The fact that your transmission is shifting hard, leads me to believe your PSOM (programmable speedometer odometer module) is awry. If your transmission is the E4OD, then a bad speedo reading will ruin the shifting properties.
You can check your calibration via the tech articles from this site (search the articles listed on top of this page). There is a walk through on how to adjust and check the stock settings. You should be able to purchase a new/refurbished one from www.dashusa.com if your stock one proves to be faulty.
I live west of you in the Brookside area. There is a transmission man Genius that works as just a garage man in a Volkswagon-buggy like place at 81st and Prospect, west of you and east of me.He was raised working on Trannys and is good man name Jim. I think the shop wants around $80 pr. hr. tho.
A great place for Tranny clutches, gears, and guts and things in A And Reds, on about 21st and indiana.
But the place that my new tranny was rebuilt at is Certified Transmission. I dont know if they work on induvidual repairs tho. Three locations in KC,,,and they have a site on the computer to look for locations. I will be returning to KC in another week, from being gone for months,,,,,, Ill have to get some DIXONS CHILLY while In there.,,,good luck.

I found a picture of what a Vss looks like, though I havent been able to get under the truck since I asked for help.BUT I do know that the Transmission That I had in truck, had a little plate the size as a quarter covering a factory hole in the back, on top of what called the extention housing. And on the new Transmission I put in, had a thing with an electric conn. in the place of the plate on the old one. And It looks like the picture I saw of a VSS. Plus, my electric wires that connect in two places on the tranny,,,had a third connection that was capped off in the exact spot for "what I think is a VSS.
I will get under there tomorrow and find and clean off the origonal that came with the truck. Then cap off the one on the new Tranny.
Thanks Mike,,,,from Tom
