I changed the cab on my 1978 f150 4wd 4 speed. The cab I put on was a 1979 cab that was an automatic trans. I am keeping the 4 speed. My ?? is. When I got it wired up. I went to start it. As soon as I turned the key one time to where just the key would be on. It started up and the starter kept running. Someone told me I would have to change the whole harness since the cab I put on was set up with an auto. tranny. To me that sounds crazy! Is there any way around that. Any help appreciated.
when you put the key in as soon as you turn the ignition on it begins to start before you even turn it all the way. ILL have to check the wiring again at the solenoid my buddy hooked it up Thanks for the drawing
I'm having a similar problem, though my truck won't even start with the key.
I've tested the wires going to the solenoid, also. With the key in the RUN position, the blue/red wire has 10 volts. When I turn the key to the start position, the brown wire has 6 volts. The solenoid won't engage, and the truck won't start with the key.
I can, however, jump the battery to the starter side of the solenoid and start the tuck, of course.
Any ideas?

on the firewall right above the heater there should a couple of wires that used to go to the automatic transmission. Take a piece of wire and run a jumper from one side of the plug in to the other side. i believe that should fix the problem. i had the same thing happen when i changed the cab on my 76 f-100 with a cab from a 78 f-250.
check your flywheel afterwards. because of your starter running all the time.

There should only be power at the Blue/red wire in START position.
I was under the assumption that the brown wire was a ground, completing the circuit to the solenoid when the ignition was turned. (am I correct?) I too was baffled when I saw voltage there.
Also...sorry to hijack the thread...my problem was just similar. :-)
Sorry it took so long to get back. Thank yall for the help. My problem was what projectdagger told me. Soon as I run the jumper wire it fired right up. Thanks again everyone
