Yep, Generation III Explorers with the tow package ('02 thru '04 for sure) have the controller connector installed where I described it, and with the V8 have a tow rating of around 6000#. Only Ford engineers would know why it wasn't put on the left side of the dash.
I installed electric brakes on my single-axle boat trailer and also tow a small toybox with electric brakes. Luckily, the harness for my Prodigy was long enough to reach the poorly-located connector.
Well Thanks very much Steina.
After an hour of poking around under the dash I just couldn't find it. Searched up this post and viola, there it is as you said. Behind the glove box up and to the left. Taped to a main harness near the firewall. I have installed controllers for years and have never come across one that is on the right side of the vehicle before. (granted we often hard wired rather than plug & play) It really doesn't make sense to me.
Yeah, the location is pretty dumb; only Ford knows why and they ain't talkin' (I've asked twice, on my '02 and '04, with no response). Luckily, my SoCal dealer was nice enough to show me where it was. Wonder if Hedge ever found it.
Steina, Does anyone make a 7-way RV plug that will plug into the Ford harness onan'02 Mountaineer? What brake controller do you recommend? I need to install both on our truck. We will be towing a camping trailer approx. 2800#. Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Any RV/trailer supply house should be able to get a harness for you; try doing a search, or maybe someone here will chime in with a good place. As for a controller, I highly recommend Tekonsha's Prodigy; reasonably priced and performs very well.
